PAPAYA!
All the Other Bloggers Said I was Daft to Plant an Orchard in a Cup
Gardening is going extremely well. The bean plants are huge, I haven't had a casualty in days, and today I saw my first papaya sprout!
I bought myself a papaya and opened it up and planted 6 seeds in styrofoam cups. That was like ten days ago. Now finally it starts to pay off.
There is a crappy area in the yard that would be great for papaya. Poor soil, questionable sun...this place has it all.
I planted 6 seeds because papaya trees don't take up much room, and because it's my understanding that they have to have sex with each other. Some trees are male, some are female, and some are kind of like Rosie O'Donnell. So unless you get a self-pollinating Rosie tree, you have to have at least one male and one female.
This should be pretty sweet. Supposedly they bear fruit the first year. And you eventually get something like a hundred pounds of fruit per tree. That's the tropics for you. Try getting fruit off a year-old peach tree.
In other news, I think I have the answer to my question about pro-Jewish charities. It looks like the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee is pretty sound and not likely to endorse bending over for Muslim invaders. Also, there is a Judeo-Christian group called the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews. Though founded and run by a rabbi, this outfit receives about 99% of its donations from Christians, probably because liberal Jews are afraid that if they give them money, they'll be financing an Inquisition. Anyway, The IFCJ has a history of offending appeaseniks and pacifists, so I give it an A-plus. The IFCJ seems like a great organization, and they route a lot of money to the JDC, so by extension, I approve of the JDC. Until further notice.
It's unfortunate that so many Jews are suspicious of American Christians who want to donate money and manpower. Sure, Christians want to convert Jews. We want to convert everybody. But that's not the reason we give money. We give money because we believe we are supposed to help Israel and the Jews, regardless of whether they have any interest in conversion. So the donations have no strings attached. They're going to come even if you ban proselytizing on Israeli soil. And proselytizing will continue regardless of whether Jews accept Christian money.
I'm only speaking for Christians; I can't tell you what the Mormons will do. It's my understanding that they're more aggressive than Christians.
Anyway, the Jews might as well accept the cash.
Here's a great article I found at the Jewish World Review. It explains it better than I can.
It's bizarre that American Jews persist in self-hating, destructive liberal political activity. The left gets more anti-Semitic and anti-Israel by the hour, and Jews are financing it, largely out of a horror of their strongest allies, conservative Christians. What a mystery. It's as if American Jewry has an autoimmune disorder.
