Some fields are meritocracies, and others are all about politics. In some fields, people with ability succeed and eveyrone else has to try to catch up. In others, it's all about which ass you kiss. In fields like that, the scum rise to the top.

Seems like just about every field in the media fits that description. The slimier you are, the better you do.

But sometimes someone talented and decent gets a break. And it reaffirms your faith that there is a point in continuing to try. The jerks usually win, but not always.

I know someone something good just happened to. You'll find out about it in a week or two. Wish I could tell you now, but I guess I'll have to be satisfied with savoring the sensation privately.

Sadly, I'll get even more pleasure from the knowledge that the people who have treated this person badly will be crapping their sheets.

Oh well.
