Another Pleasant Evening With my Tools

I am Now a Gunsmith

I did it. I installed the Red Star Arms trigger assembly and trigger pin retaining plate in the Romak III. What a nightmare.

Near as I can tell, the Romak is designed so it's impossible to remove the safety without taking the trigger out first. I suspect that they build the receiver before they attach the wood, because a totally unnecessary part of the buttstock prevents you from rotating the safety far enough to remove it. And forget about removing the wood. They must jam it in there with a hydraulic press, because removing the screws had absolutely no effect.

If you have a Romak/PSL/FPK, whatever it's called, and you want to install a pretty new RSA adjustable trigger, here is what you do. Ignore the instructions. You can't get the safety out until the guts are out, so start by ripping out the shepherd's crook, pull the hammer spring tails off the trigger, beat the trigger pin out, yank the trigger stuff out, beat the hammer pin out (hard to do because the scope rail is in the way), take out the hammer, and then install all the new stuff.

You won't be able to get the safety back in. Don't even try. You're going to have to grind a big chunk out of the tab on the safety that blocks the trigger. Buy some bluing in advance. Grind the metal out until the safety goes back in the gun, blue the ground areas, and put your gun back together. Make sure the safety works.

Don't come running to me if the safety fails and you blow your feet off. This worked for me, but I have no idea what I'm doing.

I didn't bother adjusting the trigger. It feels fantastic. The gun should go off with a good fart, whether I pull the trigger or not.

I like Birchwood Casey Super Blue. I ought to strip and degrease the gun and do the whole thing. The Romanians don't know a damn thing about bluing.

I'm upset that I'm still up. I hoped to be in bed by now. But the job took forever. And I have to spend time with the birds.

If I still can't hit anything, after buying sniper ammunition and a rest and doing all this crap to the gun, I may call the NRA and ask them to expel me.

Man, I hate mechanical stuff that comes with instructions that don't work. Luckily for me, I have like four tons of tools.
